Common Doesn’t Mean Normal: Rethinking Pregnancy and Postpartum

My Story

“Don’t worry, it’s normal.”

That’s what a kindhearted midwife once told me when I came to her with scary, uncomfortable symptoms during and after my fifth pregnancy.

She meant well. She was being honest. She wanted me to know what to “expect.”

But here’s the truth: just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s normal.
And it certainly doesn’t mean we should accept it as the only way to live through pregnancy and postpartum.

I know, because I lived it. I’ve been there — through the anxiety, the panic attacks, the hair loss, the exhaustion. And I’ve learned something that changed my entire motherhood journey.

💭 Have you ever been told that what you’re going through is “normal,” even though it doesn’t feel right to you?

The Problem with the “Normal” Label

So many symptoms in pregnancy and postpartum are brushed off as “just part of it.”

  • Constant fatigue? Normal.
  • Mood swings or panic attacks? Normal.
  • Hair falling out by the handful? Normal.
  • Postpartum depression? Normal.

But labeling these struggles as “normal” leaves mothers feeling helpless — as if they have no choice but to suffer through.

💭 How many times have you ignored your body’s signals because you were told it’s “just part of motherhood”?

The Facts I Learned in the “University of Life”

Here’s what I discovered — truths most doctors and even midwives aren’t taught:

  • Pregnancy symptoms like indigestion, fatigue, swelling, and anxiety often come from nutrient deficiencies, not pregnancy itself.
  • Postpartum struggles — hair loss, yeast infections, autoimmune flare-ups, anxiety, depression — are often due to nutrient depletion after birth.
  • Many women diagnosed with postpartum depression (and given medication) are actually just extremely low in iron and other vital nutrients.

💭 What if the very symptoms you thought were inevitable could actually be prevented — or even healed — with nourishment?

The Solution: Nourishment as Healing

Hashem led me to a different kind of education — one not found in medical school. I call it the University of Life.

By listening to my body, researching, and connecting with Hashem, I learned that pregnancy and postpartum are not illnesses to be “fixed.” They are natural parts of life that can be supported and even thrived through with the right nourishment.

And this is no accident. Hashem built into our world רפואה לפני המכה — the healing that comes even before the pain.

💭 What might change in your motherhood journey if you stopped accepting suffering as your “normal” and started seeing nourishment as your first medicine?

A Spiritual Perspective

Pregnancy and postpartum were never meant to feel like punishments. They are part of Hashem’s divine design, created with purpose and filled with potential for growth.

Every hormonal shift, every stage, is part of His plan — not to break us, but to bring us closer to Him. When we nourish our bodies in the way He intended, we align with that purpose and experience motherhood as a journey of strength, joy, and connection.

💭 How could your challenges in motherhood look different if you believed they were invitations to grow closer to Hashem?

Next Step: A Gentle Exercise

If this resonates with you, take a few quiet minutes today to reflect:

  1. List three symptoms you’ve been told are “normal.”
(Examples: fatigue, anxiety, hair loss, digestive issues.)
  2. Ask yourself: Do these feel normal for me, or do they feel like a signal my body is asking for help?
  3. Circle one area where you’d like to feel better — and commit to learning one nourishing step you can take in that area.

✨ Small steps add up. Awareness is the beginning of healing.

Ready to Change Your Journey?

It might sound blissfully unreal, but I promise you — the possibilities are endless. With the right awareness and education, you can rewrite your pregnancy and postpartum story.

You don’t have to just survive. You can thrive.
